Bulbous G is destroyed.

Yasutora Sado vs. Bulbous G is a fight between Yasutora Sado and the Hollow, Bulbous G. Sado also discovers his spiritual power.

Uryū crushes the Hollow bait.

Uryū Ishida decides to challenge Ichigo Kurosaki to a duel. For the purpose of this duel he initiates a Hollow bait which begins attracting hundreds of Hollows into Karakura Town.[2] One of the Hollows attracted by the bait is Bulbous G. He hones in on Sado's high Reiryoku and fixes his sights on him. Bulbous' initial attack misses; Sado senses his presence, although he cannot clearly see the Hollow.

Sado dodges Bulbous G.

Realizing the Hollow is after him, Sado turns and runs away, hoping to lure the Hollow away from the busy streets. He decides to bring the monster into a nearby vacant lot, where they can fight without anyone else getting hurt. When he gets to the lot, Sado finds Karin Kurosaki who was training at the lot with her four soccer buddies. Karin recognizes him as her father's former patient, but Sado has to push her out of the way of another attack.[3]

Sado shields Karin.

Bulbous G attacks again.

Bulbous stops for a few moments, sensing he now has two targets with high Reiryoku. Sado soon learns that Karin is able to see the Hollow clearly, but has no time to consider the meaning of this as the Hollow attacks again. Sado is only saved thanks to Karin's timely warning. He grabs her and jumps out of the way, but when he looks back cannot spot the Hollow. Karin warns him that the Hollow is to his right and Sado dodges and runs away. When she realizes Sado can barely see his attacker, Karin says they have no choice and offers to be his eyes during the fight.

Bulbous nursing his injured arm

Sado is reluctant to put her in such danger, but Karin insists, saying she wants to find out what is the Hollows connection to Ichigo. Sado tries to interrogate her, but she orders him to dodge an attack from the left. The teenager dodges the swing and even manages to land a hit of his own on the monster's arm. The next attack comes from the right, but Karin's alert comes too late and Sado goes down, bleeding from a wound in his head.[4]

Sado's gauntlet

Karin's friends, alarmed by the noises of the fight move in to check up on her. Karin tries to warn them to stay back, but they interpret her behavior as condescending, unaware that the Hollow is about to attack them. Sado has a flashback to his childhood in Mexico, where his grandfather taught him to value his strength and use it for the right causes. He gets off the ground and punches the Hollow's left hand, tearing it off at the shoulder and saving the children, as the huge creature is thrown back several yards away. When the dust clears, Sado is revealed to be wearing a gauntlet over his right arm[5] Karin and Sado are both puzzled by the appearance of the gauntlet over Sado's arm, but when Bulbous gets up, Sado is finally able to clearly see him and he lunges forward to face up to him. Using the full thrust of his new armored arm, Sado swings at the Hollow and hits him in his mask, effectively decapitating the creature and destroying him. Much to Karin's embarrassment, Sado looks back at her and gives her the 'thumbs up', before collapsing in exhaustion.[6]

Urahara explains things to Sado and Orihime regarding their new powers.

After the fight is over Karin, goes to get her father to help Sado.[7] When Karin brings Isshin Kurosaki to the lot and Sado is no longer there, Isshin thinks Karin was just pulling a ploy to spend time with him, prompting her to beat him up.[8] Sado was picked up by Kisuke Urahara and Tessai Tsukabishi and brought, along with Orihime Inoue, to the Urahara Shop.[9][10] Urahara tells the duo about the existence of Shinigami and Hollows and explains how Ichigo's vast spiritual powers in Shinigami form brought their innate powers to light.[11] The powers handed to them are just a key, and only their decision can bring them to open the door before them and walk through it. He then invites them to watch as he and his crew fight the Hollows summoned by Ishida's bait, so they'll know what they are up against.[12]

Both Sado and Orihime decide to train under Yoruichi Shihōin's instruction to learn how to control their powers.[13][14] They use their newly acquired powers during the Ryoka Invasion, as they help Ichigo in his quest to save Rukia Kuchiki.[15]
