Hello Bleach fans, it's that time of the week again! I have been chomping at the bit to write this review all day, and I had to worked 9 hours today at my job. Even after all these endeavors, I am super motivated and energized with creativity. So with a bag of cherry blossom candy and persimmon slices (both Gin and Byakuya would approve) at hand, let us begin!
I really liked this week's episode, especially the animation. The overall art direction and animation improves every single week. I am going to get a little off-topic here, but I believe that out of all the "Big Three" anime adaptations, Bleach is by far the best in overall production value. I might sound a little biased, because I am a huge Bleach fan-girl, but as a critic of film and media, it is the most visually appealing. Toei is pretty much a joke after the whole Dragonball Kai fiasco. Although Oda's art style may not be my cup of tea, Toei does the art no favors. With Naruto my main problem with the animation and the art is that it looks too flat and not detailed enough. Plus I think the animation team there has been relying too much on flash, and flash is such a hard medium to work in, if you can't do it right, it will not look good (a certain episode that will not be spoken of proved that). With Bleach the style and overall story stays very close to Kubo's art and story, while at the same time bringing something new to the table. So keep up the great work Bleach project team!
Another aspect I liked about the episode was how everyone showed off their moves, even Unohana (although she was a regai, but still better than nothing). We also learned about Inaba's Zanpakutō ability. I think he has a really cool power, but I am a little concerned about him being too much of an Aizen wannabe.
I have a few issues with the episode with the outcome of the Yamamoto/regai fight. Did Yamamoto lose, or are there multiple Captain regai? Also the plot twist with the Mayuri regai can either be very good or VERY bad.
I also loved the music selection in the episode, I thought all the cues matched the animation perfectly.
Overall I thought this was a wonderful episode, and I hope for the same level of quality next week.
