Captain Mayuri Kurotsuchi and Lieutenant Nemu Kurotsuchi of the Twelfth Division

The Twelfth Division (十二番隊, jūnibantai), also known as Squad 12 in the English Dub, is one of the Gotei 13, headed by Captain Mayuri Kurotsuchi.

Mayuri Kurotsuchi

Mayuri is currently the Captain for the 12th Division, as well as the president of the Shinigami Research and Development Institute.

Lieutenant

Nemu Kurotsuchi

Nemu is the current Lieutenant for the 12th Division. She was created by Mayuri making her his "daughter".

Unseated and Officers of Unknown Rank

Rin Tsubokura (壷府リン, Tsubokura Rin)

Rin is a Shinigami that who bears a strong resemblance to the 7th Seat of the 4th Division Hanatarō Yamada. He has a fondness with candy and sweets.

Hiyosu (鵯州, Hiyosu)

Hiyosu is a department head in the Research Institute tied to the 12th division. He is a large man with a bulbous head and an extendable eyeball via a crank on his head. He was the one that originally discovered Rukia Kuchiki's unusual gigai.

Akon (阿近, Akon)

Akon is the second-best gigai scientist in the Research Institute. He is tall and eyebrow-less, with a jagged part. On his forehead are three short horns. He was the first to realize that Rukia's gigai was created by someone working outside the laws of the Soul Society.

Kirio Hikifune (曳舟桐生, Hikifune Kirio)

Kirio was the Captain for the twelfth division prior to her promotion into the Royal Guard, also known as the zero division.

12th Divison as they appeared 100 years ago

Kisuke Urahara

Kisuke was the Captain for the 12th Division prior to his exile from Soul Society. He was also the President and founder of the Shinigami Research and Development Institute.

Former Lieutenant

Hiyori Sarugaki

Hiyori was the Lieutenant for the 12th Division before becoming a Vizard, 100 years prior to the main story line. She served under both Captains Hikifune and Kisuke.

Former 3rd Seat

Mayuri Kurotsuchi

Mayuri served as the 12th Division's 3rd Seat, and as Vice-president of the Shinigami Research and Development Institute, the latter fact used to make Hiyori upset, as in the Reserch Institute she was just a lab assistant, and Mayuri took pleasure in pushing her around.

Insignia

The Insignia for the 12th Division of the Gotei 13 is the Thistle. The meaning behind this symbol is Vengeance, Strictness, Independence.

Special Duties

No special duties noted for the 12th Division. Since the inception of the S.R.D.I. over 100 years ago, its role may have changed from its original duty.

The 12th Division has been directly linked to the Shinigami Research and Development Institute over 100 years ago by former Captain Kisuke Urahara. As such technological and scientific research has become the full measure of what the division involves itself in primarily. Members are tasked with research and collection of data and samples, something both the current and previous Captains are very enthusiastic about, though not to the same extreme.
