With the help of Kūkaku, a one-armed explosives expert and old friend of the mysterious talking cat Yoruichi -- Ichigo and crew are one step closer to infiltrating the Soul Society and rescuing their friend Rukia before she is executed. For Kūkaku's plan to work, Ichigo must control his enormous reservoir of spiritual energy -- and there's no telling how much collateral damage this will cause. Meanwhile, the Soul Society hasn't been twiddling their collective thumbs, and quickly dispatches a delegation of captains to give the unwanted visitors the rudest of welcomes imaginable.
Kūkaku Shiba shows Ichigo and the others her plan for helping them enter the Seireitei, while the Shinigami lieutenants gather for a meeting.
Kūkaku explains to Ichigo and his friends that she is a fireworks technician, and has Koganehiko and Shiroganehiko move the ceiling and floor, revealing her personal firework station, the Kūkaku Cannon. She gives Ichigo a small orb and tells him to give it his spiritual energy. However, Ichigo doesn't understand how to do that, and Ganju is asked to demonstrate it for them.
As he activates the orb, a sphere of energy forms around Ganju. Kūkaku explains that it is the cannonball for her cannon. She explains that the wall around the Seireitei is made of a special stone that blocks out spiritual energy. The stone also creates a sphere-shaped protection field around the city itself. The only way to enter, then, is to create a hole. By providing energy to the cannon ball, they can create a sphere of spiritons that is strong enough to break through the protection field.
Kūkaku then directs them to the training room so they will be able to withstand the ride through the Kūkaku Cannon and into the Seireitei. While the others leave, Ganju asks if she seriously intends to help them, as he has no desire to assist a Shinigami. However, she coldly asks him to not bring it up again and dismisses him.
Meanwhile, Renji has been ordered to wear his lieutenant armband, along with all other lieutenants. Renji meets up with Iba, Momo, and Rangiku in the waiting room, and Rangiku explains that everyone is so busy with their own missions that it's taking a while to locate all of the lieutenants and captains. Momo is stressed because her captain, Aizen, seems distracted, but Renji tells her that everything's alright, though he inwardly agrees with her and that he doesn't know what Aizen's up to.
Back at the Shiba residence, Ichigo continues to train while Kūkaku pours a drink and apologizes to her older brother for helping a Shinigami like the one that had killed him. However, she acknowledges that if she didn't help, he probably would scold her for not doing so, were he still alive, because he always loved Shinigami and died as a Shinigami.
Ichigo continues to practice trying to use Kūkaku's cannonball and shares with Ganju his reason for going to save Rukia Kuchiki.
Orihime, Uryū, and Chad are all capable of making the spiriton sphere from the orb previously given to them by Kūkaku, though Ichigo is having issues with it. As Kogannehiko and Shiroganehiko mock Ichigo for his lousy abilities with the orb, Taichi informs Ganju that dinner is ready, and Uryū and Chad turn to go eat, though Ichigo wants to continue to practice. Orihime lies and says that she's not hungry so she can stay with Ichigo, but her stomach's rumbling gives her away. However, Ichigo asks her to please go and eat with the others, which she agrees to do, and she, Uryū, and Chad leave.
Ganju stays behind and watches Ichigo practice, which seems to annoy Ichigo. After a little while, Ganju asks Ichigo if the Shinigami he's going to go rescue is that important, which Ichigo sort of agrees with. Ganju presses him further, wanting the exact reason why Ichigo's going to save her, and Ichigo says that he owes her a favor, because she saved his life and his family by giving him her power, which is going to cost her her own life.
Upon hearing this, Ganju suddenly decides that he wants to practice, and teaches Ichigo his shortcut for using the cannonball, which is the basics of using Kidō, though he acts like he was simply practicing and not helping Ichigo out at all. Ganju then leaves Ichigo to practice, while taunting him for his lack of skill in Kidō. Ichigo calls him a terrible actor, then proceeds with trying to use Ganju's shortcut.
Within the Seireitei, the Shinigami captains have begun a meeting with the subject of it being Gin Ichimaru.
Gin Ichimaru is questioned about why he let the intruders go while Ichigo is finally able to use Kūkaku's cannonball.
Gin Ichimaru asks if it's really necessary to have all of the captains of the Soul Society present at a meeting about him. Kenpachi questions why Gin failed to eliminate the intruders, and Gin wonders if his senses have grown dull, because he thought he had killed him. However, Mayuri accuses him of being a liar, because Gin should have been capable of detecting when someone has died or not. He then accuses Gin of deliberately letting them go and using carelessness as an excuse.
The Captain-Commander interrupts and says that the reason they were called is because Gin acted on his own without orders and failed, which is unusual, and thus, requires an explanation.
At the Shiba residence, Uryū finishes eating and asks if Orihime is also full. She again lies and says that she is, though her stomach rumbles and reveals her lie. She says that she wants to make sure enough food is leftover for Ichigo, who is still practicing. The residents then notice a disturbance in the air and it looks like one of the Great Kūkaku Arms is going to fall. Orihime identifies the pressure as coming from Ichigo, and Kūkaku and the others go to see what he's doing.
Ganju is sitting outside the practice room when Kūkaku and the others arrive, and he apologizes, saying that he taught Ichigo his shortcut and he didn't know that things would "end up like this." Inside the practice room, Ichigo was able to make a large sphere and Kūkaku tells him to focus and refine his spiritual energy. As he does, the sphere around him condenses, prompting him and Orihime to celebrate. However, the distraction causes a large crack to appear in the spiriton sphere and causes an explosion, which Kūkaku reprimands him for.
Back in the Seireitei, Gin tells Yamamoto that he has no explanation and that he won't attempt to defend his carelessness. Aizen, however, interrupts, but before he can say anything, a large announcement rings over the Seireitei, informing the captains that the intruders are in the city.
An alert is issued in the Seireitei and Ganju explains how his older brother died.
An alert comes out over the Seireitei about the presence of intruders in the city, and the captains wonder if it's the same intruders as last time. Kenpachi leaves the meeting and his lieutenant joins him, asking if he's going after the enemies. Kenpachi states that he is, because he wants to know why they survived a fight against Gin Ichimaru.
Yamamoto tells the other captains that Gin's punishment will be postponed until later and dismisses them all to their stations. Outside of the meeting, Aizen asks Gin if he "thinks he can get away with this," but Gin says he doesn't know what he's talking about. Tōshirō overhears their conversation, as they split off.
At the Shiba residence, Ichigo wakes from a nap and Uryū tells him that Yoruichi is waiting as they are ready to leave. Ichigo comments on Yoruichi's bent tail, and Uryū explains that Ichigo had grabbed it when he fell asleep. Shortly afterward, Ganju arrives in his special battle suit, and Ichigo asks what it's for. Ganju tells him and the others that his older brother was betrayed by his Shinigami partner and was killed. Because he was young when his older brother died, Ganju doesn't remember all of the details and wants to know why his brother never spoke out against Shinigami. He believes that if he accompanies Ichigo, he will find out why, so he intends to help them out.
Kūkaku tells him that if he wants to go with them, then he should not run away and give everything he has, which he agrees to do. Now that everyone is ready, Kūkaku says it's time to go.
084. The Shooting Star Project 2 [Tattoo On The Sky]
Ichigo and his friends break into Seireitei.
Ichigo asks Yoruichi if she can produce the cannonball as she did not practice with the rest of them. Yoruichi mocks him for doubting her and effortlessly produces a cannonball, a fact that upsets Ichigo. In the meantime, Kūkaku tells Ganju that they will be using the Flower-crane cannon launch method two and asks Ganju if he can do it. He replies that he can. Kūkaku then tells everybody to get ready. Yoruichi tells everybody to stay close together and not to take any unnecessary risks. Telling them to run away if they encounter captain class Shinigami and reminds them that their mission is to just rescue Rukia and nothing else. Kūkaku then begins the launch procedure and Yoruichi orders everybody to combine their spiritual energy to produced the cannonball. Kūkaku uses the Flower-crane cannon launch method two: Kagizaki to launch them. As she watches the cannonball fly away, Kūkaku tells Ganju to be careful.
In mid-air, Ganju starts the second part of the Flower-crane cannon launch method and tells everybody to adjust their spiritual energy to his. Ganju starts the incantation, but Ichigo cannot lower his spiritual energy to match Ganju's. Everybody telling Ichigo to lower his spirit energy disrupts Ganju's concentration and he can't complete the incantation. They run out of time as the cannonball hits the spiritual energy shield around Seireitei.
Inside the Seireitei, the Shinigami have been searching all night for the supposed intruders, but found nothing. Just as they are about to return to their barracks, they spot the approaching cannonball. Panic ensures as the Shinigami try to figure out what it is. Within the cannonball, Yoruichi orders them to infuse the cannonball with all their spirit energy and to harden the cannonball as much as possible. The chapter ends with the cannonball crashing into the shield surrounding Seireitei.
Ichigo and his friends become separated as they crash into Seireitei.
The chapters opens with Rukia commenting on the how small the patch of sky through her window is. The sky then begins to glow and Rukia wonders what is happening. Elsewhere in Seireitei, Aizen marvels at how the intruders were not destroyed on impact with the Seireitei shield. Meanwhile, Ichigo and his friends try to stay together, but fail. Chad is first to be separated when he endangers himself to save Ishida. Ishida and Orihime managed to grab on to each other, Ichigo manages to hold Ganju with Yoruichi perching on Ichigo's shoulders. Ichigo and Orihime reach out for each other, but before they can grab hold, they plummet to the ground. As he watches the four separate beings hurtle towards the ground, Kenpachi wonders which of them is the strongest.
In the meantime, Chad uses his powers to land safely and Orihime activates her shield to save herself and Ishida. Yoruichi comments on how she has ended up alone, but thinks that it might be for the best. Ganju uses his power: Seppa to create a pit of sand to cushion his and Ichigo's fall. When they emerge from the sandpit, they are confronted by two Shinigami. They had been hiding there because they had not felt like deploying and comment on how lucky they are to just have the intruders land on their lap. However, they state, this is not so lucky for Ichigo and Ganju.
Shinigami discover the impact crater for Chad. However, he is not there and as there is no body, the Shinigami correctly deduce that Chad is alive and spread out to search for him. Chad is up in a nearby tree and quietly watches the scene unfold. Elsewhere, Yoruichi lands on a roof and manages to elude the Shinigami who were waiting to intercept her.
Elsewhere, Orihime is dreaming that Ichigo is hovering over her, but when she awakens it is Ishida, who apologies for not being Ichigo. Ishida then comments how lucky they were in landing in a secluded spot. Orihime sustained some injuries in the fall, but Ishida bandaged her up. He again apologies to her, saying that she used her power to protect him and that if she was by herself, she probably wouldn't have gotten injured. Orihime maintains that she probably would have gotten injured anyways because of how clumsy she is; she goes on to say that if she was by herself, no one would have been there to bandage her up and she would have died from blood loss. Before Ishida can respond, she suggests that they move on as people might be attracted by the noise their crash made. As they leave, a Shinigami's foot emerges from the shadows.
Meanwhile, Ikkaku begins his lucky dance, but when Ichigo and Ganju do not use the opportunity to try and escape, Ikkaku gets annoyed and explains that he was giving them time to try and escape. Ganju suggests they run, but Ichigo refuses. Yumichika reminds Ikkaku that if they stand around much longer then others will come with whom they have to share credit. Ikkaku agrees to hurry-up and tells Ichigo and Ganju that they have until he finishes his lucky dance to try and escape. Ganju decides to run, but Yumichika gives chase.
Ikkaku asks Ichigo why he didn't run like Ganju did. Ichigo explain that if Ikkaku's power is stronger then Ichigo's then Ikkaku could run him down, but if Ikkaku's power is less then Ichigo's then Ichigo just has to defeat him. Ikkaku takes Ichigo's words as a signal to attack and does so, but Ichigo dodges. They begin to fight with Ikkaku commenting on how good Ichigo's moves are. They exchange a few more blows before each is able to scratch the other just above the eye. Ikkaku uses the pause to ask Ichigo's name and gives his own. Commenting that as their names start the same way they should be friends, but Ichigo declines.
Yumichika chases Ganju to the old execution pit, effectively cornering Ganju. Yumichika then tells Ganju that death awaits him and tells him to turn around as he likes to observe the faces of his enemy as they die.
In the meantime, Ikkaku applies septic to the cut above his eyes to stop the bleeding. He then comments on how Ichigo behaves like an amateur, taking his hand of his hilt to whip the blood from his eyes - a pointless gesture as the cuts above the eye bleed profusely. Ikkaku tells Ichigo that his movements and reactions are first rate, but his behavior is those of a novice. Ikkaku asks Ichigo who his master is. Ichigo explains that he is not sure if the person who taught him to fight can be called his master as he was only trained for ten days, but that he was taught. Ikkaku asks who it was, Ichigo replies Kisuke Urahara. Ikkaku instantly recognizes the name and comments that if that is the case then it would be rude not to go all out against Ichigo. He then releases his Zanpakutō: Hōzukimaru. Ichigo calls it a spear, but Ikkaku warns him not to misjudge it and they resume their fight.
Ichigo continues to dodge before Ikkaku uses the special ability of his Zanpakutō and reveals it to be a bladed Sansetsukon, not a spear. He manages to cut Ichigo on his right forearm and comments about how that must hurt and that Ichigo probably can't even hold his Zanpakutō any more. However, Ichigo calmly bandages his forearm with the cloth that wraps around the hilt of Zangetsu and counter attacks, destroying the wall behind Ikkaku in the process. He then warns Ikkaku that the fight isn't over and that soon Ikkaku will be the one unable to hold his sword. Ikkaku tells Ichigo that he talks big and the chapter ends.
Ichigo emerges victories in this battle with Ikkaku.
The chapter starts with Ikkaku repeating his comment that Ichigo talks big and demanding to know what the basis of Ichigo's confidence is. He then resumes his attacks, commenting that Ichigo is too slow. They continue to fight and Ikkaku manages to throw Ichigo back. Ikkaku then comments that the movements of his Zanpakutō are hard to follow and that they must confuse a novice like Ichigo. Ichigo says that is not true and reveals that he was able to tear some of Hōzukimaru's red tassel, telling Ikkaku that his eyes have gotten used to following his movements.
Ikkaku then notices that Hōzukimaru has been damaged and is shocked to realize that Ichigo did this using his bare-hands. Ichigo resumes his attacks, dramatically increasing his speed and telling Ikkaku once again that it is he who won't be able to hold his weapon before long. Ichigo lands a devastating blow that cuts Hōzukimaru and gives Ikkaku a deep cut across his chest. Ichigo starts to put away his weapon and tell Ikkaku to do the same, as the battle is over and Ikkaku lost. Ikkaku refuses, saying he is not a coward who surrenders to escape death. As Ikkaku comes towards him, Ichigo has a flashback of his training with Urahara and tells Ikkaku that he is too slow before slashing him again. Ikkaku falls to the ground commenting on how unlucky it all was. Ichigo comments that they were both unlucky.
This is an omake chapter and it involves the adventures of the Karakura Superheroes. The story for this chapter actually starts in the form of Volume Sketches that show Don Kanonji approach and recruit Karin, Jinta, and Ururu for Karakura Superheroes - a special unit that will protect Karakura Town from Hollows while Ichigo Kurosaki is not around.
Zennosuke Kurumadani introduces himself as the replacement for Rukia Kuchiki. He knows she was arrested for some crime, but does not know what crime she committed. His new assignment, however, bothers him greatly because even though he came to Karakura Town to fight Hollows, he constantly arrives at the location of Hollows to find the Karakura Superheroes are already there and dispatching the low-level Hollows, seemingly with ease. He then comments on the strangeness of Karakura Town, only to be interrupted by Tatsuki Arisawa, who can not only see him, but berates him for being creepy by watching children (Karin, Jinta, and Ururu) playing.
