Ichigo Kurosaki thought that Shinigami were the only ones hunting Hollows, but he was wrong. Enter Uryū Ishida, a Quincy, and possibly the last member of a powerful clan that died out over 200 years ago. Unlike Shinigami who strive to cleanse Hollows of their sins and send them to the Soul Society, Quincys adopt a more direct approach--they kill Hollows without hesitation. To demonstrate the supremacy of the Quincys' ways, Uryū challenges Ichigo to a contest--bait is spread around the city, attracting a large number of unstable Hollows. Whoever defeats the most wins, regardless of the danger.
Also, Orihime and Chad, confronted with a host of Hollows terrorizing their friends, awaken to their own psychic abilities. Who is the strongest? Find this out and more in the action-packed fifth volume of Tite Kubo's Bleach!
Uryū tells Ichigo that he hates Shinigami, meaning that he hates Ichigo.
At school, the students are excited over the release of grades and class ranks. Ichigo and Chad have both made it into the top 50, upsetting Keigo and Mizuiro. Ichigo ignores them, as he ponders what Uryū said earlier. He realizes that he forgot Uryū's name, but Orihime overhears him mumbling to himself, and points out that Uryū is the top-ranked student in their class. She then adds that she knows him from the Handicraft Club, prompting Ichigo to go spy on Uryū and notes that he is excellent at sewing.
After school, Uryū heads home and notices that Ichigo is following him. Ichigo wonders how long he's known, and Uryū says he noticed since Ichigo was spying on him at the Handicrafts Club, stating that Ichigo's inability to control his spiritual power tipped him off. He also points out that Ichigo must be lousy at detecting people based on spiritual power, since he didn't even know of Uryū's existence until today. He adds that he knew when Ichigo got Shinigami powers and he knows of Rukia's true identity.
He then demonstrates part of his abilities, stating that he is a Quincy. He challenges Ichigo to a fight, saying that he wants to make him understand that Shinigami are unnecessary. Meanwhile, Rukia heads to the Urahara Shop.
Ichigo agrees to Uryū's challenge while Rukia gathers more information on the Quincy.
Uryū tells Ichigo that he wants a duel because Shinigami are unnecessary.
Jinta and Ururu play a game of Rock, Paper, Scissors in order to decide who has cleaning duties for the day. Although Ururu wins, Jinta tries to bully her into playing till he wins. Tessai interferes, and shortly afterwards, Rukia arrives, looking for Urahara. When she spots him, she hits him for the effort it took to get in contact with him. She then says that she has a favor to ask of him.
Elsewhere, Ichigo tells Uryū that his proposal is ridiculous. Uryū, however, suspects that his refusal to participate in a duel is because, since his powers come from Rukia, he can't do anything without her permission, an accusation that upsets Ichigo.
At the Urahara Shop, Rukia asks about the Quincy and both Tessai and Urahara say it's been a long time since they had last heard about them. Urahara explains that the Quincy are specialists in fighting Hollows, and that their clan had been destroyed over 200 years ago. The difference between Shinigami and Quincy is that Shinigami aimed to purify Hollows and send them onto the Soul Society, while Quincy aimed for total annihilation of all Hollows. He goes on to say that it's understandable why the Quincy would think that Hollows getting sent to the Soul Society after killing so many was unfair, but that ultimately, their belief that Hollows should be wiped out led to their destruction.
Giving in to Uryū, Ichigo takes out Kon, sticking the mod soul in his body, and turns into a Shinigami. He then asks Uryū what the rules for the fight are. Uryū brings out Hollow bait, which will attract numerous Hollows, and says that whoever can defeat the most in 24 hours is the winner. Ichigo is worried about the townspeople, but Uryū tells him to keep his morality to himself, and that if Ichigo was so confident in his ability to protect everyone, then it wouldn't be a problem.
Uryū releases Hollow bait into the air and his challenge against Ichigo begins.
A Hollow enters Karakura Town and is quickly killed by Uryū. Ichigo then attacks Uryū, angry that he released the Hollow bait, but Uryū says that once the bait's been released, he can't do anything about it. He then suggests that Ichigo run so he can protect as many people as possible. Ichigo tries to insult him, but before he can, Uryū adds that Hollows prefer Humans with his spiritual energy, prompting Ichigo to think of his sister Karin. He runs off to protect her, with Kon following in Ichigo's body. As Ichigo runs, Uryū says to himself that Ichigo is about to learn how pathetic his abilities are, as Ichigo's family aren't the only Humans with his spiritual power.
Elsewhere, Tatsuki thinks to herself that the championships went well, but she's been lethargic recently, for a reason she doesn't want to share. She then comments that a couple of ghosts have been flirting all day. Orihime then approaches her, wanting to talk about something. Tatsuki remembers that a couple of months ago, she visited Orihime's house, and she's not quite sure what happened, but now, she can see ghosts. A Plus then tries to get Tatsuki's attention, annoying her.
Orihime and Tatsuki then hear screaming, and they rush to investigate. A Hollow then bursts out, attacking the two Pluses Tatsuki saw flirting earlier, and Ichigo cuts it in half. He then tries to recall Karin's schedule, and laments his own inability to detect Hollows. He orders Kon to get the cell phone from Rukia, which they have previously used to locate Hollows.
Uryū continues to kill Hollows as the spiritually-aware residents Chad, Urahara, and Karin, among others, notice the Hollow invasion.
An alarming number of Hollows enter Karakura Town and one targets Chad.
Uryū and Ichigo continue to fight Hollows while Rukia and Urahara take notice of the Hollows' presence. Rukia is astonished by how frequently her cell phone is going off, alerting her to a Hollow, because it's unusual for Hollows to come at such a high pace.
Chad notices an unusual disturbance, but is prevented from investigating because of his friend, Gitano Shigeo, who wants to get lunch. However, as they walk away, a Hollow emerges, and while Gitano and Harutoki can't see it, Chad notices a haze where the Hollow is at. The Hollow attacks, and Chad saves his two friends, telling them to run. He notices that it the Hollow is targeting him, and while he doesn't know what it is, he figures the best thing to do is run to a place where no one else will get hurt.
Elsewhere, Karin and her friends play soccer, but because of Karin is distracted, she's not playing very well. She decides to quit playing, since the strange feeling in the atmosphere is bothering her, and she runs into Chad. Chad grabs her and dives out of the way, protecting her from the Hollow's attack.
Karin and Chad try to escape the Hollow, and when it looks like a confrontation is inevitable, Chad uses his strength to protect Karin.
Without Karin around, her friends don't know what to do, and while they talk, they suddenly notice something disturbing.
Meanwhile, Chad and Karin face the Hollow, and Chad tries to work out what it looks like, still only able to see a hazy form. Karin, on the other hand, can see it clearly, and when Chad turns to her to get more information, the Hollow attacks again. Chad dives and protects her, and tries to determine where the Hollow went. Karin points out that the Hollow is on the left, and realizes that Chad can't see it very clearly. Clinging to his back, she tells him to run while she'll be his eyes.
Karin tells Chad that it isn't the first time that she's seen these monsters, and she wonders what they have to do with Ichigo. The Hollow resumes its attacks, and while they're able to avoid some of them, the Hollow finally lands a blow, injuring Chad. As she wonders about his condition, her friends arrive, wondering if she's okay. She tries to tell them to run, but the wording of her warning annoys them, giving the Hollow time to approach them from behind. Upset, she runs to their aid.
Chad thinks of grandfather, who had once reprimanded him for using his strength to hurt others. His grandfather asks Chad what his fists are for, and Chad thinks to himself that they are not for causing pain, but for protecting others. He stands, running to Karin, and asks for strength. Chad hits the Hollow, and blows of its left arm. Chad's right arm is now covered with a strange armor.
Chad develops a new power and takes out the Hollow.
Chad recalls his grandfather's words that because he is big and strong, he needs to be kind. Presently, Chad's right arm has gained a sort of armor, which he used to blow off the Hollow's left arm. Karin notices it, but before Chad can say anything, the Hollow stands again, and he goes to attack it.
As Karin watches Chad attack the Hollow, she notices that he must be able to clearly see it now, as he aimed for the Hollow's head. Chad kills the Hollow, and she calls out to him. He gives a thumbs-up, which she calls "corny," and then he collapses. As Chad lies there, he wonders about the armor on his arm, the monster and how he was able to defeat it.
When Karin approaches him, he asks if she's alright, which she confirms, saying he's the only one who got hurt. He says that's good, and she stomps on him and gives him a lecture about there being nothing good about anyone getting injured. She tells him to continue laying there, as she'll go get her father to help him.
At the Karakura High School, Chizuru and Tatsuki are cleaning up the mess from a Hollow attack, unaware that's what caused the glass to shatter. Annoyed, Chizuru goes to leave, and then spots Orihime. She asks Orihime what's wrong, and Tatsuki interrupts. Orihime suddenly decides that she wants to watch TV, and grabs them both to go to her house.
As they leave the school, a Hollow crawls across the top of the school's building.
Orihime notices a monster on the roof and tries to get her friends away from it. However, the monster has other plans for her.
Upon realizing that she is the only one who can see the strange thing on the roof of the gym building, Orihime tries to get Tatsuki and Chizuru to leave as soon as possible. She doesn't know what the thing is, but she instinctively understood that the thing was dangerous and that they had to get away from there as soon as they could. However, because she doesn't want to scare the others, she pretends nothing is wrong. She just urges them to leave.
Tatsuki and Chizuru both agree, but Tatsuki wonders what's wrong with Orihime as she does not normally skip out on chores. Chizuru starts to rave about Orihime, earning a gut shot from Tatsuki. Chizuru then reminds Tatsuki that she is still in her Karate Gi. Tatsuki goes to get changed just as Orihime notices that the monster has moved from where it was. She calls after Tatsuki as she tries to locate the monster. She finally notices that the monster is suspended between the buildings behind her. She tells Chizuru to run as the monster comments on the fact that Orihime can see her.
The monster mocks her for telling her friend to run, and fires bullet-like projectiles form her head that shatter the glasses of near-by buildings. After the hail of projectiles stop, Orihime notices that she isn't hurt, but Chizuru is. She goes to see if Chizuru is alright. Seeing Orihime cry, Chizuru tries to act fine even though she is bleeding from her right shoulder and doesn't know what hit her. She tells Orihime not to cry and reaches for her, but then suddenly finds that her right arm is choking Orihime of their own volition.
The monster explains that the projectiles were seeds that after hitting their victim, sprout and take over. The monster goes on to say that it doesn't like to fight and therefore stays away from the battle front and watches its victims tear each other to bits. The monster then sends many of Orihime's classmates and even the gym teacher after her. They start to hurt Orihime, but Tatsuki arrives and beats them back. Tatsuki cannot see the monster, but has a vague idea where it is. Tatsuki tells the monster that she has a strict policy of kicking the crap out of anyone that makes Orihime cry and as such, she is going to kick the monsters ass.
The monster turns the tables and Tatsuki is badly hurt. This time, Orihime will have to protect Tatsuki.
Tatsuki beats back her controlled classmates easily until the monster uses Chizuru to distract Tatsuki and shoot her full of seeds. As the seeds start to take Tatsuki over, the monster starts to plan how she is going to kill Tatsuki. Suggesting things like having the other students tear out Tatsuki's hair and hanging her from the roof before forcing Tatsuki to cut the rope herself and kill herself. The monster also continues to hurt Orihime, making Tatsuki react and tell the monster to shut-up and let Orihime go. Angry, the monster tries to hit her with one of its tentacles. Tatsuki captures the tentacles with her mouth and bites down hard. The monster unleashes a barrage of attacks. Seeing this Orihime fights back the students holding her and runs to Tatsuki's side. However, Tatsuki who is now covered in sprouting seeds kicks Orihime.
Orihime then recalls how she has always been proud of her hair because her brother used to compliment her on it. She always had her hair long until Junior high. Then, an upper classmate took scissors to it because they didn't like it. Orihime cut the rest of her to match. She was upset and unhappy, but couldn't bring herself to tell her brother the truth. Shortly after he died and Orihime became lonely, she became withdrawn at school until Tatsuki befriended her. Because of Tatsuki's friendship and the protection she provided, Orihime got the confidence of grow her hair out again. She states that her long hair is a symbol of her trust in Tatsuki.
As she thinks these things, Tatsuki continues to beat her up and finally kicks her to the ground. As Orihime lies on the ground she thanks Tatsuki for protecting her the last three years. Tatsuki starts to cry because of what she is doing to Orihime, but Orihime tells her not to cry and that from now on, she will protect her. As Orihime says this, her hairpins react and the monster wonders what is going on. Orihime turns towards the monster and tell it that she will show no mercy towards anyone who hurts Tatsuki.
Orihime turns the tables on the monster that attacked her and Tatsuki.
The monster demands to know where Orihime's confidence comes from and demands to know "what are those gnats around" Orihime. That is when Orihime notices the things flying around her and wonders what they are. This enrages the monster, and it demands to know if Orihime hadn't seen them. One of the things flying around Orihime, tells her that she must have noticed them as they have always been close to her. They things introduce themselves as the Shunshun Rikka - her power.
Orihime initially freaks out, but the things calm her down and explain again that they are her powers. They then go on to introduce themselves as Hinagiku, Baigon, Lily, Shun'o, Ayame and Tsubaki. As the monster starts it's attacks again, Orihime first activates the Santen Ketsuhun to project herself the monsters projectile seeds. She is then prompted to use Shun'o and Ayame to active the Soten Kishun, which she uses to heal Tatsuki. Lastly, she uses Tsubaki and Koten Zanshun to cut the monster in two.
Having killed her opponent, Orihime is surprised at what she was able to do. She then collapses as the Shunshun Rikka comment that it must have been too much for her to use them all at once, straight after discovering them. They than change back into her hairpins, as Kisuke Urahara arrives on the scene with Tessai Tsukabishi, who is carrying Yasutora Sado.
