Reopening of the Substitute Business! The Terrifying Transfer Student is the one hundred and tenth episode of the Bleach anime.
Ichigo Kurosaki goes back to purifying Hollows in the Human World, but he is soon confronted by Shinji Hirako - a Visored.
Summary[]
As shadows extend from craggy rock spires and shift over the land in Hueco Mundo, a bound Grand Fisher kneels and groans at the bottom of a square pit and begins rocking back and forth before his body begins expanding in size, causing the bindings to crack and shatter around him while his limbs break free. With pieces of his bindings clinging to his arms and legs, a now-humanoid Grand Fisher stands up and stretches, and as his mask opens to reveal his face, Grand Fisher says Ichigo Kurosaki's name.
Meanwhile, at Karakura High School in the Human World, Ichigo walks through one of the hallways with his bag over his shoulder and is greeted by Mizuiro Kojima, whom he smiles at prior to holding out his arm with a bored expression in order to clothesline Keigo Asano when the latter cheerfully hurtles toward him down the hall. Left to collapse by a departing Ichigo, Keigo is reminded by Mizuiro that the latter warned him against doing this, only for Keigo to vow to one day do it successfully as Ichigo notes that he is as hopeless as ever.
Upon entering his homeroom, Ichigo finds Orihime Inoue and Yasutora Sado standing with Uryū Ishida, who sits at his desk and follows Orihime and Sado greeting Ichigo by criticizing his hair for being messy like usual. However, Ichigo simply tells him to shut up and joins them, prompting Keigo to express shock at the four of them hanging out again and recall how they have been acting strangely friendly with each other ever since summer break prior to demanding they tell him what happened. Though Ichigo asserts nothing happened, a crying Keigo insists they are leaving him out of something big and this is the beginning of him being excluded from their circle.
An exasperated Ichigo affirms this and tells Keigo to stand in the corner, and while Mizuiro observes Ichigo is just teasing him, a stunned Keigo curses the blue skies and runs off. Suddenly, Chizuru Honshō wraps her arms around Orihime from behind and hugs her breasts as she enthusiastically greets Orihime, but is sent flying away with a kick to the face from Tatsuki Arisawa, who refutes Chizuru describing this as a retort and reprimands her for still being perverted even though it is already autumn. When greeted by Ichigo, Tatsuki inquires about how his paper is going and clarifies she is referring to the assignment given to him, Orihime, Sado and Uryū during their break.
With Tatsuki pointing out how she told him about this earlier, Ichigo admits that he forgot about it, which leads an annoyed Tatsuki to state that she is not liable if he cannot finish it on time and muse that things will get difficult for Ichigo if he takes too many breaks before noticing the charm attached to Ichigo's shirt and wondering what it is, which Ichigo decides to explain. In the past, Ichigo returns the charm to Isshin Kurosaki at the dining room table in the Kurosaki Clinic and apologizes for forgetting to give it back sooner, only for Isshin to declare that he no longer needs it and proceed to sew it to Ichigo's shirt despite the latter's bewilderment and protests.
In the present, Ichigo finishes recounting what his father did to Tatsuki, who asserts she already knew this since no one other than Isshin would do such a thing and clarifies she was referring to the Substitute Shinigami Badge hanging out of Ichigo's pocket. Though he attempts to come up with a lie about what it is and where he got it, Ichigo is astonished upon realizing Tatsuki can see the Substitute Shinigami Badge to begin with, and as Tatsuki expresses confusion at this, Misato Ochi enters the room and has her students sit down to take attendance, where she notes Reiichi Ōshima and Keisuke Sorimachi are not present like usual due to being delinquents.
While Misato announces that she will be introducing a new transfer student to the class today, Ichigo stares at the Substitute Shinigami Badge in his hand and remembers 13th Division Captain Jūshirō Ukitake detailing how the badge being stronger than it looks and dangerous for anyone other than Shinigami to use is why it has a visual barrier installed that prevents normal Humans from seeing it. With Ichigo questioning if that was not true or if it is just broken, the Substitute Shinigami Badge begins flashing lights from the eyes on the skull and emitting a Hollow alert, startling Ichigo, Orihime, Sado, and Uryū as Mizuiro asks Ichigo if he is okay.
As Ichigo nervously assures Mizuiro that he just has a stomach cramp, Misato wonders who screams out loud from a stomach ache and opens the classroom door to welcome the transfer student, but is surprised to find that he is not outside prior to Ichigo rushing out of the classroom and down the hallway while claiming that he is going to the restroom. Despite Misato not believing this, Orihime and Sado rush out as well with the same excuse, and when Misato claims that girls like Orihime are supposed to hold it in until they start getting a stomach ache, Orihime counters that it hurts very badly already, prompting Misato to concede defeat and permit them all to go in irritation.
Upon having Keigo attempting to follow suit, Misato grabs him by the collar and refuses to let him go as well, which leads an outraged Keigo to repeatedly assert that she is playing favorites as Mizuiro tells him to stop. Sighing at this, Tatsuki looks out the window to the courtyard below and is shocked to see Ichigo running across it in his Shinigami attire. Shortly afterward, Ichigo confronts a pig-like Hollow in one of the streets of Karakura Town and blocks dozens of light energy blasts from its mouth while Orihime stands behind him with Sado and expresses surprise at there still being Hollows present, with Sado observing that Hollows will exist so long as Humans do.
With the Hollow repeatedly mentioning beef and pork while it comes down on him with a punch to the ground, Ichigo leaps into the air and tells him to make up his mind before slashing his Shikai, Zangetsu, through the Hollow's head down to his navel, purifying the latter. After landing on the ground, Ichigo notes that he should be able to take out the usual Hollows by himself now and that it was not necessary for Orihime and Sado to cut class as well, only for Orihime to admit that she has always wanted to try cutting class by pretending to go to the restroom while Sado observes that this was excessively honest even though it is good that Orihime is not making excuses.
When Orihime notices Uryū did not come with them, Ichigo reminds her it cannot be helped since he does not have any Quincy powers right now, and with Orihime lamenting how it has been two weeks since they returned, Ichigo assures her Uryū will figure out something for himself since he fought so hard even without powers as Sado concludes they should believe in Uryū. With Ichigo, Orihime, and Sado walking away, Shinji Hirako stands upside-down in the sky above them and finishes drinking a bottle of water, which he sets down in midair, prior to grinning and musing on Ichigo. At the Urahara Shop, Jinta Hanakari and Ururu Tsumugiya sit with Ririn.
While Ririn rests on the ground in her plushie body with a magazine and Jinta eats with Ririn, Kurōdo and Noba walk into the central room in their Gigai, where Kurōdo announces that they are finished unpacking as Ririn expresses surprise at the two of them having things to unpack. Kurōdo reveals that Orihime left him with a number of parting gifts, and upon being asked by Ririn if he is certain that she did not simply push useless garbage onto him, Kurōdo criticizes Ririn for being so rude and drinks the tea set out by Ururu as he observes that Ririn has gotten accustomed to staying in her plushie body, with Ririn stating that it is easier to do so once one gets accustomed to it.
Upon being asked by Ririn why he and Noba do not do the same, Kurōdo admits it would be best if they did not take up much space or cause trouble now that they will be staying at the Urahara Shop. With Ururu inquiring about why they have moved into the Urahara Shop, Noba notes they are Bount sensors and no longer have a function to perform now that the Bount are gone while Ririn points out how Ichigo and his friends being at school all day would make it hard for them to stay hidden if they stayed with Ichigo's group. As Noba concludes they can still see Ichigo and his friends at any time, Jinta grinds his fists into the sides of an understanding Ururu's head.
Jinta proclaims that Ririn, Kurōdo, and Noba should be helping out around the Urahara Shop from now on since Kisuke Urahara created them as Ururu apologizes and Kurōdo attempts to stop the conflict, leaving Ririn annoyed. Back at Karakura High School some time later, Misato introduces Shinji to her class as the transfer student she was telling them about this morning, and after writing out the kanji forming his name and giving examples of terms they are individually used in, Shinji bows to the students, but Misato draws his attention to the fact that he wrote the kanji forming his name completely backward while the other students laugh in surprise at this.
However, Shinji merely claims that he is proficient in writing things in reverse, which Misato acknowledges as she attempts to figure out where to seat him. With Shinji requesting that she put him next to a cute girl and Misato deciding that he can sit next to her in this case, which he is astonished by, Ichigo looks at Uryū and mentally admits that the latter's powers not returning so easily contrasts with Ichigo's expectation of him recovering immediately. Suddenly, Shinji takes the desk to Ichigo's right and observes that they are going to be neighbors before expressing a desire for them to be friends, leading a startled Ichigo to agree to this as Shinji grins at him.
That night, at the Kurosaki Clinic, Kon furiously declares that he does not want to live in Ichigo's bedroom anymore and laments his inability to go outside and befriend curvaceous women, which prompts Ichigo to instruct him to stop making a fuss since Karin Kurosaki and Yuzu Kurosaki will hear him if he does. In response, Kon threatens to sue Ichigo for infringement of stuffed animal rights and ponders how any perverted action he takes while inhabiting Ichigo's body will only ruin the latter's reputation, with a stunned Ichigo wondering if he has been committing such illegal actions all this time, prior to tearfully asking Rukia Kuchiki to return and spend time with him.
When the Substitute Shinigami Badge begins emitting another Hollow alarm, Ichigo grabs it to enter his Shinigami form and presses the badge against Kon's head to retrieve the latter's Gikongan, which Ichigo drops into the mouth of his body while he instructs Kon to take care of it without causing a ruckus until he returns before opening his bedroom window and leaping out, leaving Kon to tell him to take his time and revel in being in Ichigo's body again after so long as he decides to go out and indulge in his desires. Elsewhere, Ichigo sees a Hollow roaring on a rooftop and notes that this is what he was alerted to before leaping up and cutting it in half vertically with Zangetsu.
Suddenly, with Ichigo expressing disappointment at this being all it took and observing that it is to be expected at this point, Zennosuke Kurumadani stands on the rooftop across from him and demands to know who Ichigo is and why he is dressed like a Shinigami. Upon being asked by a perplexed Ichigo who he is, Zennosuke introduces himself as the replacement for Rukia following her arrest and claims to be an elite Shinigami, but when Ichigo identifies himself as a Substitute Shinigami and holds up his Substitute Shinigami Badge, an initially shocked Zennosuke begins laughing and reveals that he has never seen or heard of such a thing before, to Ichigo's chagrin.
From behind Ichigo, Shinji walks through the air upside-down and rotates to align himself with Ichigo while drawing his Zanpakutō and grinning fiercely. Alerted to this, Ichigo turns around and raises Zangetsu just in time to block Shinji's subsequent strike, creating a gale of force around the two that sends an alarmed Zennosuke flying away. Upon recognizing Shinji and realizing that he is wielding a Zanpakutō, Ichigo demands to know who he is, only for a smiling Shinji to press a finger against his own lips and chastise Ichigo for making so much noise like this when he has such high Reiatsu, since doing so will rattle the world and draw undue attention.
With Ichigo wondering whose attention he will attract, Shinji is unimpressed by him not knowing already and decides to spell it out as Orihime looks nervously out of her apartment window, Sado walks down the street with Gitano Shigeo and Harutoki Ide, and Uryū enters a park with a bag of sewing supplies prior to being startled when The Menos Grande emerges from a Kūmon behind him. Meanwhile, in a different part of Karakura Town, Kon shivers after being scared by a strange noise he heard and expresses relief at it not being Ichigo finding him while running down the street and vowing to enjoy his youthful escapades even though it is nighttime.
As Kon promises to not do anything illegal in the process, another Kūmon is opened behind him by Grand Fisher, who pulls himself out into the night sky and raises his mask to glare down at a running Kon under the impression that he is Ichigo. Back in the park, Uryū leaps back and into the air just before The Menos Grande uses its tongue to strike the ground where he was standing. Sliding back along the ground, a stunned Uryū realizes he is facing a Menos Grande. Simultaneously, Kon is blown back by an energy blast crashing into the ground in front of him and complains about how everything is getting in his way, but stares in shock when Grand Fisher reveals himself.
Kon responds to Grand Fisher questioning if he does not recognize him by remembering him from his previous fight against Ichigo. Meanwhile, at the Urahara Shop, Urahara stands outside the front entrance and stares up at the night sky with concern as thunder rumbles in the distance. During this, Ichigo pushes Shinji back in a burst of Reiatsu that leaves Zennosuke clinging onto the raised ledge of a rooftop and calling Ichigo and Shinji monsters for their strong Reiatsu. With Shinji noticing the arrival of Grand Fisher and The Menos Grande, Ichigo demands to know who he is, only for Shinji to reiterate that Ichigo's turbulent release of Reiatsu caused this.
When an angered Ichigo repeats his inquiry, Shinji berates Ichigo for being difficult and balances his Zanpakutō on his shoulder while wondering if Ichigo is truly so concerned with who he is. Placing his hand against his forehead and observing that it cannot be helped, Shinji gathers and condenses Reishi into a pharaoh-like Hollow mask that he holds over the left side of his head and teasingly asks an astonished Ichigo to identify. With Ichigo realizing it is a Hollow mask like his own, Shinji holds up his Zanpakutō as well and identifies himself as a Shinigami who has stepped into the domain of Hollows before reminding Ichigo of his desire for them to be friends.
Shinji concludes he is a Visored and Ichigo is the same as he is while inviting Ichigo to join his group due to not belonging on the side of the Shinigami. Simultaneously, Uryū runs through the park away from The Menos Grande and mentally questions if the latter is actually a Menos Grande due to its powerful Reiatsu, but decides it does not matter since he can still fight even without his powers as he unzips his shirt and withdraws four Gintō to throw at The Menos Grande, who sees them bounce off its chest. After landing on the ground opposite The Menos Grande, Uryū initiates Heizen, creating a large rectangular column that severs The Menos Grande's left arm.
Though Uryū internally notes that these Gintō were charged with his Reiryoku while in Soul Society and will be enough for him to put up a fight even though they are not strong enough to win with, The Menos Grande simply regenerates its arm, which a surprised Uryū recognizes as High-Speed Regeneration, and lunges forward to grab at Uryū, who moves back and withdraws the Silber Draht on his right armband to embed in a nearby tree and wrap around an adjacent tree prior to leaping toward The Menos Grande, only for the latter's upper body to disappear and reappear behind Uryū, who realizes with shock that the upper and lower body are two separate Hollows.
With The Menos Grande's upper body extending its tongue toward him again, Uryū narrowly evades it and falls back down to the ground, only for the lower body to slam into him from the side, sending Uryū flying across the ground before he stops himself by pulling the Silber Draht taught. However, when The Menos Grande's upper half lashes its tongue at Uryū once more, a Heilig Pfeil flies though the air and completely severs the tongue almost at the base, leaving the upper half to scream in pain as Ryūken Ishida steps forward and criticizes Uryū as pathetic. Upon being addressed by name, Ryūken notes Uryū's lack of respect for his father has not changed.
Shinigami Illustrated Picture Book[]
Standing on a rooftop in Karakura Town, Zennosuke Kurumadani demands to know what is going on since so many strange people reside here, with several individuals able to see him and a Substitute Shinigami showing up as well, to Rin Tsubokura, who apologizes for the delay in informing him due to the disruption in the Seireitei. With Rin instructing him to continue purifying petty Hollows and not get in the way of Ichigo Kurosaki before hanging up, a dejected Zennosuke wonders what happened to his status as an elite Shinigami.
