Ichigo is informed that Chad is missing and that his sister Karin is sick, something that is unusual for her. Ichigo and Rukia frantically search for Chad as Karin gets increasingly ill. Much to Rukia's surprise, Ichigo activates a high level spirit detection skill that is far beyond Rukia's abilities to detect the soul of Shibata the parakeet, and thus the location of Chad. When Ichigo and Rukia find Chad, he runs from them. As they are about to pursue him, Karin arrives, barely able to stand. Rukia tells Ichigo to take Karin home while she pursues Chad. As Ichigo is carrying Karin home, she tells him that she saw a memory from the parakeet. The parakeet's strongest memory flowed into her and she tells Ichigo that Shibata saw his mother get murdered. Karin then begs Ichigo to help Shibata.

Ichigo is carrying his sister Karin back to their house. Karin tells Ichigo to tell Shibata that if he goes to the other side, then he can be with his mother again and asks Ichigo to not let Shibata be alone any more. Rukia tries to chase down Chad, but is having limited success due to her Gigai. As she is focused exclusively on Chad, she allows the Hollow Shrieker to sneak-up behind her. Meanwhile, Ichigo, who is shown hurrying to Rukia and Chad's location, reflects on how he has not seen Karin cry since their mother's death, stating that Karin's way of not being a burden on her family was to look after herself.

In the meantime, Rukia confronts Shrieker and attempts to fight him. However, while she can perform some Kidō spells, they have no bite, but by using Kidō, she reveals to Shrieker that she is a Shinigami. Shrieker then reveals that he has killed Shinigami in the past who have come to Konsō the soul of Shibata and taunts Rukia to leave her Gigai and fight for real. Meanwhile, Chad finds out from Shibata that Rukia is being attacked, and after leaving Shibata on a wall out of harms way, Chad comes to Rukia's aid. Chad punches away Shrieker. This shocks Rukia, as the act was supposed to be impossible for an ordinary human. Chad continues to punch blindly before landing another hit on Shrieker. Shrieker then takes to the air; when Rukia mentions this fact Chad realizes Rukia can see ghosts. Chad instructs her to tell him where Shrieker is as he rips up an electrical pole in order to hit the airborne Shrieker. Thanks to Rukia's directions Chad is able to bring down the pole on Shrieker for a direct hit.

C 10 cover

Shrieker is seemingly defeated from Chad's attacks. However, Shrieker cannot be killed without a Zanpakutō, but Rukia tells Shrieker to just give-up and informs him that a Shinigami will be here soon to finish him off. Shrieker begins to laugh and asks Rukia why she isn't wondering how he was able to kill two Shinigami. He shiftily turns the tables on Rukia and Chad by way of his artillery, saying that the reason the Shinigami keep getting eaten is because they never expect him to have friends.

However, Chad throws off the artillery and kicks them off Rukia much to the surprise of Shrieker. Shrieker takes to the sky again, this time flying too high for Chad to reach him with poles. So Rukia has Chad launch her towards Shrieker in an attempt to bring him down. Shrieker, however, surprises Rukia by having his artillery launch special leeches at Rukia. As Rukia falls towards the ground she is caught by Chad, but is unable to get the leeches off her. Shrieker then reveals their special function and has them explode, greatly injuring Rukia. Shrieker then brings out Shibata's cage and orders Rukia to run so that he can have the pleasure of chasing her down, warning Chad (through Rukia) that if he gets involved then Shibata will be blown-up. Rukia tells Chad not to worry and starts to run. Shrieker continues to injure and taunt her when suddenly she stops. When Shrieker asks her is she is giving up, she says no just that there is no reason for her to ran any more. Ichigo has arrived and introduces himself to Shrieker and challenges Shrieker to be his opponent.

C 011 cover

Cover of 011. Back. [Leachbomb or Mom]

After Rukia pulls out Ichigo's soul from his body and transforms him into his Shinigami form, he begins to fight Shrieker. She also explains about Shrieker's special attacks, which explained to Ichigo why Chad and Rukia had been separated. Ichigo and Shrieker start to fight and move away from Rukia. In the meantime, Chad arrives on the scene asking about Ichigo's seemingly unconscious body. Rukia explains that Ichigo is fighting the demon. As Ichigo is fighting he asks Shrieker if he killed the Shibata's parents. Even as Ichigo is having his conversation with Shrieker Shibata starts to explain how it is his fault that everybody got hurt, because he wanted to bring back his mother. Shrieker explains that before his death he was a serial killer who killed eight people and was famous enough to be on TV. He came after Shibata's mother and stabbed her a dozen times, but she kept trying to run away and protect Shibata. He chased her to a balcony and just as he was about to finish him off, Shibata grabbed his shoe laces and he lost his balance and fell to his death. After turning into a Hollow, Shrieker decided to make Shibata suffer. He jammed Shibata's soul into a parakeet and convinced Shibata that he would bring his mother back if Shibata ran for him for three months. This was a lie, but Shibata fell for it and Shrieker used Shibata to lure unsuspecting victims to their death, including two Shinigami. Ichigo goes into a rage after hearing this story and attacks Shrieker mercilessly, including cutting off Shrieker's tongue that he uses to detonate his leech bombs.

Ichigo is still fighting Shrieker. After cutting off Shrieker's tongue, Ichigo proceeds to cut off Shrieker's legs, taunting Shrieker and telling him to feel his fear in full, as it is what Shrieker's victims felt. He tells Shrieker to drive the feeling of fear deep into his brain and disappear. After the final cut is delivered, a large door with two skeletons adorning the front appears, shocking Ichigo. Rukia arrives to explain that they are the gates of Hell, explaining that a Zanpakutō can only purify sins committed after death. If a Soul committed heinous crimes before death, then they are sent to Hell. The doors of Hell open and the Demonic creature impales Shrieker on a sword and drags him to hell. Afterwards Rukia tries to return Shibata to his body, but discovers that the Chain of Fate has been severed and Shibata is now really dead. She tells him to go to Soul Society, explaining that it is a nice place that is better then the Human World, where he will never be hungry. Ichigo senses that Rukia is making a sales pitch, but adds his voice and tells Shibata that if he goes to Soul Society he might be able to see his mother. Shibata believes Ichigo and gives the okay to start the Konsō. Shibata also thanks Chad for all his help. Chad at first only returns monosyllabic answers, but just before Shibata is about to leave for Soul Society, he asks Shibata if he can carry him around one more time when Chad himself goes to Soul Society after his death. Shibata agrees. Karin thanks Ichigo as she lies in bed dreaming.

Back in school, Chad has no memory of what transpired with Shrieker. Rukia arrives and after clobbering Ichigo, drags him away. In the school yard, she presents him with the Soul Candy and explains its properties. Ichigo takes one and turns into his Shinigami form. He is then taken away by Rukia to fight a Hollow as the false Soul inhabits his body. Ichigo tells the false Soul to go to class and lay low. Chad, Keigo and Mizuiro return to their classroom to find it in a mess and Tatsuki still in a rage. A teacher arrives to demand an explanation. As Chizuru and Ryō Kunieda comment on how Ichigo was acting weird, Orihime tells them that person was not Ichigo. In the meantime, Rukia explains to Ichigo about Project Spearhead and Mod-Souls. Mod-Souls were created to be used inside dead Human bodies to fight Hollows, but due to ethical concerns the project was scrapped and all Mod-Souls destroyed. This saddens Ichigo, and he wonders what the Mod-Soul must be feeling.

The Mod-Soul is feeling great and he makes his way to the school of Ichigo's sisters, where he is seen by both of Ichigo's sisters and their friend Midori Tōno. Karin Kurosaki threatens Midori and tells her to stay quiet about seeing Ichigo jumping ridiculously high. The Mod-Soul in Ichigo's body encounters a group of children playing games where one of the children deletes a character he created in-game because said character was not good enough. This upsets the Mod-Soul. Elsewhere, Urahara and his employees head out to find and neutralize the Mod-Soul.

Rukia is trying to get information from a fruit and vegetable seller. But the shop keeper tries to scam her into buying a melon, but Ichigo prevents her. As they are leaving they get an order for a Hollow that's close-by. Meanwhile, at Ichigo's sisters school, the children playing video games come and complain about a orange-haired high-school student who flew by and broke their game. The Mod-Soul himself is running around thinking about what the children said about deleting characters and says that has put him in a bad mood. However, as it is running off it senses the Hollow, which Ichigo and Rukia received orders about, and realizes that the Hollow is going after the kids with the video games.

He pulls them to safety just as the Hollow is about to attack them and tells them to run. At first, they don't understand as they can't see the Hollow. But when they see Ichigo's body suddenly get injured they get frightened and run away. Ichigo and Rukia arrive to find the injured Mod-Soul has lured the Hollow to a nearby roof top. Ichigo cuts the Hollow into two and berates the Mod-Soul for messing up his clothes and body, and tells him to not fight if he can't fight without getting injured. The Mod-Soul explains that he had to fight to save the children because Ichigo was late. The still alive Hollow interrupts them, but they attack it together and kill it. As the Hollow starts to fall, the Mod-Soul unexpectedly jumps down and kicks it away at great risk of himself and Ichigo's body. Ichigo at first is confused by this, but then realizes that the Mod-Soul didn't want the falling body of the Hollow to crush some ants.

Ichigo and the Mod-Soul talk, with the Mod-Soul explaining that he has had a lot of time to think about things and he has decided that no one has the right to kill anyone else and that he has decided that he would not kill anyone. About that time Urahara arrives on scene, and removes the Mod-Soul from Ichigo's body using his cane. Ichigo demands to know who Urahara is, and what he is going to do with the Mod-Soul. Urahara says he has no choice, but to destroy the Mod-Soul, but can't think of a good way to introduce himself to Ichigo. Rukia arrives and calls him a greedy merchant and takes the Mod-Soul back from him. Rukia tells him that she is satisfied with her purchase and as they operate outside of Soul Society law, they don't have to confiscate the Mod-Soul. Urahara tells her that he won't take the fall for her. Rukia says that's fine and gives the Mod-Soul to Ichigo. Ichigo thanks her, but Rukia replies that she has been thanked. Later, Rukia and Ichigo find themselves watching a news reports about the Mod-Souls antics on TV.
