Getsuga Tenshō

From Bleach Wiki

Ichigo's Shikai Getsuga Tenshō

Getsuga Tenshō (月牙天衝, "Moon Fang Heaven-Piercer") is Zangetsu's only special ability and technique that Zangetsu can give Ichigo Kurosaki and his signature attack.

Description

Getsuga Tensho is a concentrated blast of spiritual energy thst can be fired from Zangetu's blade in a number of ways. Ichigo can swing Zangetsu and the blast fires in a crescent moon shape. It can be shot across the ground crushing a path in the ground as it advances. Getsuga Tensho can be kept in the blade to increase the swing to make an explosion. Lastly the Getsuga Tenshou can be fired from the tip of the blade like a bullet.

While in Bankai, these potent blasts are black with a red outline and their paths can be controlled, becoming faster and more powerful with an extended range. Ichigo can also use this technique to augment blade swings, increasing his sword's power. Ichigo can also fire the attack from the tip of the blade as if it was a gun, altering and extending its range.

Getsuga Tenshō is a technique which can become more powerful when Ichigo expels more spiritual energy into it. It uses a large amount of Ichigo's spiritual power, which is why in situations where he has expelled too much spiritual energy, he cannot use the technique effectively. Ulquiorra Cifer believes that the Getsuga Tenshō is Ichigo's strongest attack, and is similar to a Hollow's Cero, in particular, Cero Oscuras.

Appearance and Power

Ichigo's Bankai Getsuga Tenshō

The Getsuga Tenshō has several different appearances:

  • Shikai: Getsuga Tenshō's blasts are light blue streaks which carry to varying ranges. The power of the attack is capable of carving a large furrow in the ground. When used with a swing at an airborne target, the attack takes the form of a crescent moon-shaped white blast. However, when used on the ground, it instead rages forward, crushing the ground as it advances. It can also be used without a swing, in which case the blast rather resembles the Kidō spell Sōkatsui, manifesting in the form of a surge of white energy traveling forward.
  • Bankai: The attack becomes much more powerful, changing color to black with crimson outlines. Unlike the Shikai version, the direction of the black Getsuga Tenshō can be controlled, providing greater range and accuracy. Often, upon contact, it will engulf the foe and create a gigantic explosion. The power of Getsuga Tenshō is further increased when Ichigo assumes his Vizard form. Ichigo's Inner Hollow's version is instead white with a crimson outline.

In contrast to Zanpakutō such as Zabimaru, Zangetsu provides Getsuga Tenshō as its only technique. Nonetheless the technique can be used in a multitude of different ways: by striking the ground, an omnidirectional blast can knock away incoming attacks; Ichigo can also keep Getsuga Tenshō within Zangetsu to augment his sword swings.

In Other Media

Getsuga Tenshō appears in many Bleach video games. In Bleach: Blade Battlers 2nd, Ichigo using Getsuga Tenshō can hit four times while using his mask for 11 seconds for two uses of the mask. In other games, Getsuga Tenshō hits an opponent even when they are mobile.

Getsuga Tenshō also appears in Bleach: Soul Carnival, where it takes the form of a large sword blast that takes nearly all the screen and does moderate damage. Getsuga Tenshō, being a quite powerful technique for Ichigo to use, can inflict moderate to enormous amounts of damage.

Getsuga Tenshō also appears in Bleach: Shattered Blade, it can inflict moderate to enormous amounts of damage. The Bankai version covers an entire horizontal line and does more hits whereas the Shikai version disperses.

Getsuga Tenshō also appears in Bleach: The Blade of Fate. The release requires one spiritual bar and releases a light blue attack.
