Overview

Jirōbō Ikkanzaka (一貫坂慈楼坊, Ikkanzaka Jirōbō) is the former 4th Seat of the Seventh Division and the younger brother of Jidanbō Ikkanzaka. He is also known by the nickname Kamaitachi (鎌鼬, Sickle Weasel).[2]

Appearance[]

Jirōbō is a tall and heavyset man with large lips and a large nose below a pair of small, round eyes with pale blue irises.[3] His hair is short and black with curled sideburns reaching halfway down his hears. Jirōbō wears the standard Shinigami shihakushō, accessorizing it with a small-beaded bronze bracelet on each wrist and a large-beaded bronze necklace with a red tassel hanging down at the front. He wears his Zanpakutō by tying its scabbard to his waist with a large white sash, tied in a bow at the front.[4]

Personality[]

Jirōbō believes strongly in making his opponents regret their poor decisions, going so far as to count to ten when first confronting them in order to give them time to properly regret encountering him to begin with.[5] He is extremely proud of his combat prowess and the projectile weapons power granted by his Zanpakutō; in tandem with others calling him Kamaitachi Jirōbō in recognition of his skill, Jirōbō believes he is the ultimate weapons master and will brag about this to his opponents.[6] This arrogance also leads him to mock his opponents for making mistakes on the battlefield and look down on their strength, such as when he lectured Orihime Inoue for not being able to perform an attack with killing intent[7] and assumed Uryū Ishida was regretting meeting him as a fellow projectile weapons user after displaying his Shikai.[8] In combat, Jirōbō is seemingly pragmatic, having initiated his battle with Uryū and Orihime by attempting to attack Orihime while she was not looking.[9] He also expresses great interest in fighting unique opponents, like Uryū, a Quincy, and Orihime, who used an attack he had never seen before - even celebrating getting to fight both at the same time as a "twist of fate".[10] Jirōbō is willing to compliment those whose abilities impress him, like Uryū, only to follow up by boasting about himself.[11]

92Jirobo turns

Jirōbō reveals his true nature by going after a defenseless Orihime Inoue.

However, all this serves to mask Jirōbō's true nature as a dishonorable, misogynistic coward. As laid out by Uryū, from the moment Jirōbō made his presence known during their battle, he was targeting Orihime because she was a woman and the weaker combatant: attacking while she was not looking,[9] contemptuously cutting through her only attack and belittling her for not having killing intent on a battlefield before attacking her once more,[12] and even attempting to kill or take her hostage when it became clear that he was vastly outclassed by Uryū himself.[13] Jirōbō's arrogance fell apart when Uryū destroyed his Shikai and injured his hand, leaving him yelling in pain and visibly sweating in fear as he lost his composure,[14] and when faced with defeat and assuming he was about to die, Jirōbō could only scream in terror.[15]

Soul Society arc[]

Ep28JirōbōAttacksOrihime

Jirōbō attempts to attack Orihime Inoue from behind.

Some time after the Ryoka infiltrate the Seireitei, Jirōbō finds Uryū Ishida and Orihime Inoue hiding from the Shinigami on a rooftop, where he attempts to attack Orihime from behind while she is talking to Uryū. Upon discovering that Uryū saved Orihime from his blow with Hirenkyaku, Jirōbō compliments him before commanding the two of them to feel regret over being found by him.[16] After counting to ten in order to give Uryū and Orihime enough time to regret, Jirōbō attacks them once more. Dodging this, Orihime attempts to counterattack with Koten Zanshun, but Jirōbō easily cuts through Tsubaki mid-flight due to Orihime's lack of killing intent.[17]

Ep28TsunzakigarasuShattered

Jirōbō is stunned when Uryū Ishida completely destroys his Shikai.

Jirōbō admonishes Orihime for performing an attack with no killing intent behind it, though he admits that he does not know what it was, and asserts that the battlefield is no place for such attacks as he attempts to attack her once more. However, Jirōbō has his blow deflected mid-swing when a Heilig Pfeil from Uryū slams into his hand, pushing it and his Zanpakutō aside. Elated to learn that Uryū is a Quincy on top of Orihime being a user of attacks he has never seen, Jirōbō releases his Shikai, Tsunzakigarasu, and boasts about the superiority it grants him as a master of projectile weaponry, only to be left stunned when Uryū destroys it with a barrage of Heilig Pfeil.[18]

92Jirobo is shot

Jirōbō has his Saketsu and Hakusui destroyed by Uryū.

With Uryū mocking his preference for long-winded speeches over actually fighting, a flustered Jirōbō attempts to reform Tsunzakigarasu, but Uryū destroys his Zanpakutō's hilt and punches a hole in his hand with another Heilig Pfeil.[14] Screaming in pain as he clutches his injured hand, Jirōbō is angered by Uryū inquiring if he regrets this encounter and moves to grab Orihime in a desperate attempt to take her hostage or harm her. However, Uryū moves between the two of them and exposes Jirōbō for the coward he is by pointing out his constant, dishonorable targeting of Orihime. Seeing Uryū aiming another Heilig Pfeil at his face and bidding him farewell, Jirōbō can only scream before having his Saketsu and Hakusui destroyed by two shots from Uryū, sending him flying back and effectively ridding him of his Shinigami powers by cutting off his Reiryoku production.[19]

Former Powers & Abilities[]

After Uryū Ishida destroyed his Saketsu and Hakusui, Jirōbō lost his Shinigami powers.[20]

Spiritual Power: As a former Shinigami and a seated officer, Jirōbō possessed higher-than-average levels of Reiryoku.

Shunpo Practitioner: Despite his large size, Jirōbō could move fast enough to appear behind and attack Orihime Inoue without her realizing it.[9]

Enhanced Strength: Befitting his size, Jirōbō could put a considerable amount of power behind his sword strikes, allowing him to crater the ground with his blows[21] and even cut vertically through a roof with the force generated by his attack.[22][20]

Zanpakutō[]

Tsunzakigarasu (劈烏, Splitting Crow): Jirōbō's Zanpakutō takes the form of a large katana, proportionate to his own size, with a purple-grey handle. Its guard is shaped like the number 8 and extends outward along the width of the blade, with a crescent shape engraved on the top of both circles.[4][23]

TsunzakigarasuShikai

Jirōbō releases his Shikai, Tsunzakigarasu.

  • Shikai: The release command is "Flap Away" (羽搏きなさい, Habatakinasai; Viz "Spread Your Wings"). Jirōbō releases his Shikai by holding his Zanpakutō vertically in front of him with the tip pointing upward, placing his palm on the tip of the blade, and shoving his Zanpakutō upward while pressing downward with his hand, resulting in the blade separating into dozens of identical flying blades; each blade has a hole in the center and is radially symmetrical with two curved edges.[24]
Shikai Special Ability: Jirōbō can control the movement of the flying blades with his mind. According to him, prior to his fight with Uryū, no one he had faced had ever lived after seeing the blades due to their great speed allowing them to move faster than the eye can see.[2]
  • Blade Recreation: If the blades of Tsunzakigarasu are destroyed, Jirōbō can summon more by sheathing and drawing his sword.[25] (Unnamed)

Weaknesses[]

Zanpakutō[]

Brittle Blades: The blades of Tsunzakigarasu can be easily destroyed by other projectile weapons, such as Heilig Pfeil.[26]

Hilt Destruction: If an opponent destroys the hilt of his Zanpakutō, Jirōbō can no longer use Blade Recreation to restore the flying blades of Tsunzakigarasu.[27]

Trivia[]

Quotes[]

  • (To Uryū Ishida and Orihime Inoue) "Not a bad show of skill at all, fleeing at so close a range...My compliments! And, goodbye! Do regret! Had you not run into me as your foe, then you might have lived just that little bit longer."[30]
  • (To Uryū and Orihime) "Four, five, six...ten! Your time for regret is up! Were you able to regret to your satisfaction?! In a moment, you will have all eternity to regret!"[31]
  • (To Orihime) "I've never seen a move like that before, but I sensed no killing intent behind your attack! You may be able to kill a Hollow with that move, but it won't work on a Shinigami. Do you think this is a playground? This is a battlefield! You won't be able to accomplish anything here with an attack that lacks killing intent!"[7]
  • (To Uryū) "Heh heh... this should be fun... a girl with mysterious moves, and a Quincy... and they both use weapons. And two of you! To appear as my enemies! What a coincidence! What a twist of fate!"[32]
  • (To Uryū after releasing his Shikai) "What do you think?! Now feel regret! I am 7th Division 4th Seat Jirōbō Ikkanzaka! Also known as Kamaitachi Jirōbō! The title of Kamaitachi is the mark of the ultimate weapons master! No one but me has ever seen these blades flitting through the air and lived! Terrifying, aren't they?! They're quicker than the eye! As a weapons master yourself, you must regret having met me."[6]
