Gin Ichimaru is a Shinigami and the former captain of the 3rd Division of the Gotei 13, until he betrayed Soul Society, alongside Sōsuke Aizen and Kaname Tōsen. His lieutenant was Izuru Kira.
Gin saves Rangiku Matsumoto when he finds her after Aizen used her in his experiments and he swears to kill Aizen. Gin plays an important role during the Ryoka Invasion, manipulating his comrades and subordinates. He escapes Soul Society with Aizen and Tōsen into Hueco Mundo and becomes a commander in Aizen's Arrancar army. During the invasion of Karakura Town, Gin takes on Ichigo Kurosaki, easily gaining the upper hand. He later turns on Aizen and tries to kill him, but fails and is fatally wounded, though he finds peace upon seeing Ichigo return to defeat Aizen with a new strength in his eyes and demeanor.
