As Isshin notes that the Hollow is all black and its hole has been filled, Aizen observes from a remote location. Aizen is surprised to see Isshin, and Tōsen notes that the 10th Division's captain did not obtain permission to travel to the Human World. Aizen then states that he wants to see the battle up close.

In Karakura Town, Ryūken spots Masaki heading out to investigate the powerful Reiatsu emanating from the ongoing battle. He then tells Masaki that they should only come out after the Shinigami have died and that it is the job of Gemischt such as Katagiri to do this anyways. He proceeds to tells her to be more aware of her position as a pure-blooded Quincy, and to care more about herself.

Isshin struggles with the Hollow, noting that it feels as if he is fighting a Shinigami rather than a Hollow. He is then pushed into the jurisdiction of the 13th Division, Karakura Town, prompting a Shinigami to warn him of his violation of the jurisdiction boundary. However, the black Hollow quickly fires a Cero at the Shinigami.

Sensing this, Masaki tells Ryūken that she could not live with herself if somebody died because she did not help when it was in her power to do so, and heads out. Ryūken then instructs Katagiri to prepare the Reishi armor.

Realizing the extent of its abilities, Isshin wonders who has been hiding the existence of this Hollow from Soul Society. He releases his Zanpakutō and is promptly slashed from behind by Aizen, as Ichimaru and Tōsen look on.

Masaki intervenes in Isshin's battle with the black Hollow.

Aizen reflects on the inventor of the Reiatsu-concealing cloak that allowed him to attack Isshin, Kisuke Urahara. Realizing that his wound was inflicted on him by a Zanpakutō, Isshin correctly deduces that a traitor is hiding nearby. When he beckons for the traitor to come out, Aizen tells his subordinates to stay back.

Aizen determines that with the wound he inflicted, Isshin would be unable to use his Bankai because of the strain it puts on his body. He adds that if the "sample" loses to a captain using only Shikai, then it is a failure in the first place. Tōsen insists that Aizen refer to the Hollow as "White", stating that it is different from any Hollow they have ever created before - it is the first to be based on the soul of a Shinigami. Aizen apologizes to Tōsen, but remarks on the irony of naming a black Hollow "White" simply because of its inner "whiteness".

Troubled by his wound, Isshin has difficulty fighting the Hollow, and he realizes that he would be unable to use his Bankai in his current state. Nonetheless, he strikes the Hollow with a massive, empowered slash, cutting off its arm just as Masaki arrives on the scene. Even with a missing arm, the Hollow manages to pin Isshin down and charge a Cero. However, it abruptly cancels its attack and moves in time to dodge one of Masaki's Heilig Pfeil, much to Aizen's surprise. Tōsen offers to intervene, but Aizen stops him, intent on seeing what will happen next.

Disengaging from Isshin, the Hollow dives towards its new attacker, dodging all of her arrows along the way. Realizing that it is too fast to hit, Masaki allows it to close the distance and bite her shoulder. Indicating that she has the Hollow, she promptly fires an arrow at point-blank range, straight through its head.

Isshin and Aizen's group look in as the Hollow explodes. Isshin shields Masaki from the full force of the explosion and is injured in the process. As they talk, Isshin asks her who she is. Masaki is concerned about how the Shinigami will react upon learning that she is a Quincy, but she tells him anyway. She is pleased by his gentle and kind reaction. Ryūken and Katagiri look on from above and decide to leave, as they are not needed.

Arriving back in their lab, Tōsen is agitated by the demise of the Hollow. He states that the Hollowfication of the Shinigami was a success and it had reached the final form of its transformation, but it was ultimately a failure because of the Quincy's intervention. Aizen declares that it was not a failure, merely an unexpected turn of events and asks if they would not want to see how things unfold from here.

Isshin delivers his report on the Hollow to Captain-Commander Yamamoto and the other captains. Yamamoto decides to overlook his unauthorized actions since he managed to resolve the situation with minimal loss of life or damage to the Human World. He suspects that Isshin has omitted something from the report, but the captain denies this. Later, Isshin reminisces on his encounter with Masaki, wishing to see her again.

Meanwhile in her school, Masaki also reflects upon the encounter. As she walks home from school with her friends, Masaki encounters Kisuke Urahara and momentarily becomes faint.

At the Tenth Division barracks, Rangiku Matsumoto brings some paperwork to her captain, in hopes of getting him to fill it out while she goes shopping. In Captain Shiba's place is a note telling Rangiku that he had some business to take care of in the Human World, and requests that she think of an excuse to tell the Captain-Commander. Rangiku becomes visibly furious, and tears up the note, accusing her captain of not taking his job seriously.

At the Ishida residence, Masaki returns only to be greeted by Ryūken's mother, who is disappointed in her. Ryūken's mother scolds Masaki for breaking the Quincy rules and saving a Shinigami from a Hollow. Masaki denies it, to which Ryūken's mother states that she has proof. Ryūken immediately realizes that his mother found out from Katagiri, and confronts her about it. Katagiri tells Ryūken that she felt the need to report the situation, despite his instructions otherwise, because Masaki was attacked by White and was in need of treatment, or else their arranged marriage would endanger the blood of future Quincy. Ryūken rushes back to where his mother and Masaki are arguing, and begins shouting, attempting to take the blame for the incident. Masaki interrupts, telling Ryūken to not try to take the fall for her, but collapses mid-sentence. Ryūken's mother is the first to notice the cause: a Hollow-like hole that appeared on her chest. Ryūken lifts up Masaki and asks his mother where his father is. She states that she doesn't know, and has been trying to get in touch with him. Ryūken rushes out of the house with Masaki still in his arms, and his mother shouting at him begging for him to come back.

While running, Ryūken starts to blame himself for what happened to Masaki, because he didn't attempt to help her in the fight against White. While engrossed in his state of depression, a Hollow attacks him from the right. Before he can react, the Hollow is struck down by Isshin. Isshin then notices the inured Masaki and requests to take a look for himself. Ryūken proceeds to shout at Isshin, saying she was injured trying to protect him. While shouting, Ryūken is cut off by Kisuke Urahara, who instructs both Ryūken and Isshin to come with him if they want to save Masaki.

535. Everything But the Rain op.8 "Defenders"

Urahara explains how he will save Masaki's life and the consequences of doing so.

Within her inner world, Masaki falls into a pitch black hole. As she contemplates how dark and quiet it is, she realizes that she is not afraid because she believes that someone is searching for her. As she wonders who it is, a giant Hollow mask with its jaws agape appears before her.

In the physical world, Urahara explains to Isshin and Ryūken that he has been studying Masaki's condition for over a century. When Isshin questions his age, Urahara reveals his identity. Not caring about who Urahara is, Ryūken demands that he save Masaki and change her to how she was before. However, Urahara explains that Masaki will never be the same again. Urahara explains Hollowfication to the two of them, stating that it is the act of inserting a Hollow's soul into an ordinary soul and breaking the boundary between the two, thereby making the latter more powerful. He states that the original intent was to use Hollowfication to strengthen Shinigami, but that they did not possess the technology to control it. He concludes that Masaki's condition is the result of using the same process on a Quincy.

Urahara states that while she cannot be changed back, her life can still be saved. He explains that when Hollowfication progresses, the subject turns into a monster incapable of reason. Eventually, the boundary between the soul and the external world vanishes, causing it to self-destruct. Urahara calls this process "Soul Suicide." He then states that he has found a way to prevent it - the insertion of an opposing force into the victim balances it out, preventing the boundary from being destroyed. He states that he saved a group of Shinigami by injecting them with a vaccine composed of Quincy arrows and Human souls, a procedure that stopped "Soul Suicide" without fail. However, he states that allowing Masaki to live as an ordinary Human would require a far greater power, one that would stay with her until her death.

Realizing what Urahara is implying, Ryūken calls him a liar, stating that there has to be another way. Urahara states that only Isshin can make the decision. He shows Isshin a special Gigai, stating that if he enters it, he will become midway between a Human and Shinigami. Because Shinigami are the opposites of Quincy and Hollows are the opposites of Humans, Isshin would essentially become the complete opposite of Masaki. Urahara proceeds to explain the downside to the method, stating that Isshin would lose all of his powers and would essentially become Human. His soul would have to be tied to Masaki's with a powerful Reishi string that would prevent him from leaving the Gigai. Before he can finish his explanation however, Isshin abruptly accepts.

Complaining that Urahara's explanations are too long, Isshin tells him that he will quit being a Shinigami and protect Masaki for a lifetime. Urahara asks him if he will have any regrets. Isshin states that even if he has regrets, that he will be ashamed of himself if he does not go through with it. Understanding, Urahara beckons him, declaring that they will start the operation.

In her inner world, Masaki continues to fall closer and closer to the Hollow. Before she falls into its mouth however, Isshin abruptly appears at her side and catches her, stating that he has come to protect her.

After explaining how he rescued Masaki, Isshin prepares to reveal the truth behind her death to Ichigo.

After Isshin arrives in Masaki's inner world, he uses Getsuga Tenshō, splitting White's mask in two while Masaki looks on. Masaki exclaims that Isshin is the Shinigami that he had previously met, and asks about if he was reprimanded afterwards, or if his wound hurt. Isshin shouts that she should not be acting like that while naked, while Masaki gleefully asks him his name, but before he could answer, he suddenly finds himself in the real world. Urahara says that Masaki and Isshin's souls were successfully connected, and that Masaki is no longer in danger.

Meanwhile, Ryūken approaches Katagiri. She asks him if he left Masaki with Isshin, to which he says "yes". He then tells her to go home and tell his mother that he is unfit to lead the Quincy, which she says she will not do as it is her duty to protect him at all costs. She goes on to say that since she met him, she has been dedicated to him, and tells him not to be sad because it breaks her heart. Ryūken then interrupts her and says that he will be fine and that the both of them should go home, to which Katagiri acquiesces.

Isshin narrates that Masaki left the Ishida family after graduating from high school and says that since her soul was tainted with a Hollow's, their decision was not difficult. He continues, saying that it was most likely Ryūken's decision, probably as a way to part with Masaki. Isshin states that he had personally opened a clinic with Urahara's help, using the healing skills he learned. He recalls that Masaki would often stop by and mock his white clothes. He told her that the reason he lost his powers was because he was exiled from Soul Society, but suspects that Masaki knew that he was lying, and says that the lie was not important between them, since she could see through all of them and forgive them. He then remembers a movie that he and Masaki had seen together in which a man compared his wife to the sun. Isshin says he remembers Masaki crying and himself thinking that she was like his sun.

As Isshin talks about Ichigo being born, he says that Ichigo knows the rest of the story, of how his Shinigami and Hollow powers were awakened, which reawakened Isshin's own power. Isshin then says that Ichigo was misinformed and that nine years before this day is when Masaki died, and that he is about to reveal the real reason she died.

537. Everything But the Rain op.10 "Prinz von Licht"

Isshin elaborates on the deaths of Masaki and Katagiri to Ichigo.

Summary:

537Cover

Cover of 537. Everything But the Rain op.10 "Prinz von Licht".

Isshin reveals to Ichigo that Quincy have a special ability called Blut, which allows them to flow Reiatsu in their blood vessels. It is a skill only pure-blooded Quincy possess from birth, and the ones who don’t can obtain it through training. Masaki was a Pure-blooded Quincy who possessed this ability. When Grand Fisher attacked Masaki, Isshin was at home and he felt the Reiatsu of both, but without his Shinigami abilities, he was not able to do anything. He knew that Masaki was not at a disadvantage due to her Blut abilities and should have defeated him without much difficulty.

However, that didn’t happen, and she quickly died. Isshin then asked Ichigo if he knows anything about Uryū's mother. Ichigo responds by saying that he doesn’t because Uryū is not the kind of person to talk about that. Isshin reveals that he is the son of Kanae Katagiri, who was a mixed blood Quincy. Nine years ago, on 17th of June, she lost consciousness and died 3 months later. Ichigo asks what had happened. He mentions the Auswählen in which Yhwach had made a selection of Quincy.

Isshin mentions that in Quincy folklore, there is a Sealed King who would regain his heart after 900 years, his intellect in 90 years and his powers after 9 years. To regain his powers, he stole the powers from Mixed-blood Quincy, whom he considered impure and made it his own. It was because of that Katagiri died and Masaki also lost her powers during the battle with Grand Fisher, which is why she died.

Ichigo asks how he could do such a thing and asks who Yhwach really is. Isshin tells him that he is the one who created Quincy, and thus all Quincy started from him. Therefore his blood flows in every Quincy. Ichigo repeats the last conversation he had with Yhwach and finds out what the meaning of what he said. He then thanks his dad for what he said, Isshin notices the determination in his eyes. Ichigo walks out of the house and notices Ikumi Unagiya, she gives him back his Combat Pass that he forgot at her store. Ichigo mentions that he’s going.

At the Wandenreich's palace, Jugram Haschwalth arrives with Uryū, who is wearing a Wandenreich uniform. Yhwach asks him to fight together, Uryū just looks at him until Yhwach calls him his son.

538. Standing On the Edge

While Ichigo returns to complete Ōetsu Nimaiya's training, the captains and lieutenants of the Gotei 13 undergo their own preparations for the next battle.

Summary:

As Ichigo heads off, Isshin asks him how he plans on getting back to the Soul King Palace. Ichigo stares back at his father quizzically when Mera shows up behind him, taking him back. On the way back, Mera explains the process of opening the Chōkaimon: the gate to the Palace. When it is opened, a precise time for a round trip has to be set, and that Ōetsu had decided on one night. Ichigo finds himself in the same room he had previously been in with Renji and the Asauchi. Ōetsu says that he believes Ichigo will be able to choose his Asauchi, as multiple Asauchi spirits show up behind him. Ichigo reaches out his hand and grabs one, which takes on a form similar to that of Ichigo with a Hollow's mask. Ōetsu approves and says he'll personally forge the blade.

Meanwhile, in the Tenth Division barracks, the members are practicing their swordsmanship in preparation for the upcoming battle against the Wandenreich. Two members of the Division begin discussing the situation with Tōshirō Hitsugaya, with one of them stating that since he's lost his Bankai, the Tenth Division is done for. Hitsugaya then shows up at the entrance, stating that because his Bankai was stolen, he wants to learn to start again from the basics. While training with the Division members, Hitsugaya reflects on the time he spent training his Bankai after the fight against Sōsuke Aizen, and states to himself that there is no time to dream about something that won't come back, and that all he can do now is look forward.

Outside of the Seireitei, Shūhei Hisagi asks Kensei Muguruma why they are out there. Kensei tells Hisagi to release his Bankai, explaining that although his wasn't stolen, it might be next time, and that Soul Society needs more people that can use it if they want to stand a chance. Kensei instructs Mashiro Kuna to use her Hollow form. Kensei warns Hisagi that Mashiro is strong in this form, and that he should release his Bankai if he doesn't want to die. Before Hisagi has the chance to argue, she knocks him to the ground. Kensei tells Hisagi that he needs to be more careful, and that he will die if he's not. Kensei goes on to say that he isn't as gentle as Tōsen. Hisagi gets up, and tells Kensei that, although he has always respected him, he has no right to insult Tōsen.

Meanwhile, Tetsuzaemon Iba stands outside of a cave, wondering when Sajin Komamura will come out of it. Sajin, inside the cave, respectfully greets a large dog, who tells Komamura that he has guts if he came back.

539. Prob-less, Progress

As work gets underway to clean up the devastation wrought upon Soul Society, a bandaged Akon returns to the Shinigami Research and Development Institute. A subordinate asks about Akon's recovery and tells him that the captain and lieutenant haven't emerged from Mayuri's room since the Quincy attack. Akon notes that the surveillance bugs have surreptitiously been deactivated, and upon activating his own secret camera into the captain's room, witnesses a shady operation under way.

In the Ōmaeda household, Marechiyo Ōmaeda's sister Mareyo asks him to play ball with her as he rests. He protests, but she breaks into tears. Their brother, Marejirōsabu, offers to read her a book instead, but Mareyo rejects him and walks away. Marechiyo thinks of his solitary captain, who has left him behind as she completes rigorous training on the top of a rocky pinnacle.

In a dark cave, Sajin Komamura confronts his great-grandfather and asks to learn the family's secret technique. His great-grandfather states that the conflict with the Quincy is irrelevant: the world's power structure will simply change and his and Komamura's kind must lay low, and endure as they always have. Komamura disagrees, and a battle begins.

In Ōetsu Nimaiya's domain, Ichigo and Ōetsu slide down a smooth pipe along with Ichigo's Asauchi, until they arrive the bottom of the cliff. Showing the area where Nimaiya forges the Zanpakutō to Ichigo, Nimaiya states that the expansive sea surrounding the cliff provides the water necessary for their purposes, and tells Ichigo to say goodbye to Zangetsu.

Characters in order of appearance:

540. THE SWORD FIVE

Ōetsu forges the Asauchi into a new Zanpakutō for Ichigo. He tells him what he thought was the spirit of Zangetsu is actually the personification of his Quincy powers.

Summary:

Nimaiya summons his helpers to him and prepares to forge Ichigo a new Zanpakutō. While the group begins to forge the new blade from the Asauchi, Ōetsu asks Ichigo if he noticed something while in contact with the spirit of the Asauchi. He states that it bears a resemblance to his inner Hollow, because it is his inner Hollow, and that the Hollow is, in fact, his Zanpakutō. He goes on to explain that this Hollow, called "White," was created by Aizen out of the souls of multiple Shinigami. Additionally, they have the same composition as the Asauchi that Ōetsu uses to make Zanpakutō. The Hollow fused with his Shinigami's powers and became his Zanpakutō. Ichigo interjects with a suspicion, to which Ōetsu states that the entity Ichigo knew as Zangetsu was pretending to be his Shinigami powers.

Ichigo finds himself in his inner world, standing in front of the spirit of his Zanpakutō. Ōetsu asks Ichigo if he knows the man standing in front of him, to which Ichigo replies that it is Zangetsu. Ōetsu says he's wrong and that this isn't actually his Zanpakutō, but rather the source of his Quincy powers; which appears as a younger version of Yhwach from 1,000 years prior.
