Berenice Gabrielli (ベレニケ・ガブリエリ, Berenike Gaburieri) is a Quincy and a member of the Wandenreich's Sternritter with the designation "Q" - "The Question".[2]

Appearance

Berenice is a relatively slender individual. Their hair is mostly short and pink, but the right side of their bangs are longer and purple. Their fingernails are painted and each bear a dark diagonal line. Their attire is a variation of the Sternritter's typical white uniform, consisting of the order's signature hooded-cloak, a trench coat, and a bolo tie encircling their neck.[3]

Personality

According to 11th Division Captain Kenpachi Zaraki, Berenice is a very talkative person.[3] Ultimately, this made them over-confident with their ability, which made them careless and lead to their death.[4]

Plot

The Thousand-Year Blood War

Ep371KenpachiKillsBerenice

Berenice is killed by Kenpachi Zaraki.

Upon receiving the orders of Yhwach, Berenice and the other Sternritter gather at the Gate of the Sun before traveling to the Seireitei to participate in the conquest of Soul Society.[5]

Once there, they and the others create pillars of blue flame prior to engaging the Shinigami in battle.[6] Shortly afterwards, Berenice is one of three Sternritter who confront 11th Division Captain Kenpachi Zaraki during the invasion's initial stages. However, Kenpachi rips their throat out and later carries Berenice's corpse atop his shoulders, alongside those of the others, before unceremoniously dropping it in front of Yhwach.[3]

Powers & Abilities

The Question (異議 (ザ・クエスチョン), Za Kuesuchon; Japanese for "Objection"): With their Schrift, Berenice can harm their opponents by objecting to their existence and actions.[7] They can make an objection to something, and the opponent is penalized if they fail to overcome that objection, with the opponent being forced to respond. Berenice explains their ability using the German word "sollen" (ゾルレン, Zoruren; German for "Should/Shall") or the Japanese word "igi" (異議), which expresses the idea of something that should be done or the way something ought to be, such as being ordered to do something by force or through one's duty; with this being demonstrated through them questioning Zaraki's murderous intent. [8]

Great Spiritual Power: Berenice's spiritual power is on a level comparable to or greater than that of a captain-level Shinigami.[9]

Reishi Manipulation: As a Quincy, they primarily absorbs Reishi from the atmosphere and combines it with their own Reiryoku to form weapons.[10] They have an easier time collecting this energy in environments with higher concentrations of Reishi such as in Soul Society or Hueco Mundo.[11]

Weaknesses

The Question

Speechlessness: The Question is rendered ineffective if Berenice is unable to fully speak.[7]

Inaudibility: The Question is rendered ineffective against people unable to fully hear them talking.[7]

Trivia

  • Berenice's hair is depicted as pink and purple in the manga, black and blonde in the digital colored manga, and purple and blonde in the anime.

Quotes

  • (To Kenpachi Zaraki) "The Question! Kenpachi Zaraki, I object to everything about you! For those who have been called out and objected to by me... should those who are objected to, are obligated to answer my objections! To you, who lacks wisdom, do you realise how dangerous this is? It is impossible for you to understand. Therefore! There is no other way than to know yourself! I know about you, Kenpachi Zaraki, the embodiment of murderous intent. In that case, first and foremost, towards your very essence of murderous intent... I will raise an objection. Now! The first objection, Kenpachi Zaraki! Your murderous intent-" [8]
